CEX.IO Review 2026: A Reliable Crypto Exchange?

CEX.IO is a centralized cryptocurrency exchange that has been in operation since 2013. It currently has over 15 million users globally in more than 185 countries. It supports over 300 crypto markets and over 100 fiat-to-crypto pairs. In addition, it offers staking, margin trading, and instant buy/sell.

The exchange has several security protocols in place to protect user funds, which include cold storage and multi-sig wallets, TLS encryption/SSL, two-factor authentication (2FA), ongoing transaction monitoring, and source-of-funds verification. No wonder the platform hasn’t experienced significant data breaches to this time.

Its market share is smaller when you compare it to giants like Binance or Kraken. But that doesn’t mean it is not reliable. In fact, the platform is a stickler for compliance as it offers regulatory registrations and follows PCI DSS standards. In the US, it is registered with FinCEN as a Money Service Business, and it holds over 30 money transmitter licenses. In Europe, it is regulated by several bodies, including the GFSC, CySEC, FCA, and in Lithuania, having obtained the VASP license.

Although the user feedback is mixed, especially regarding customer support and withdrawals, CEX.IO has proven to be a reliable crypto exchange platform:

  • it received an “A” rating in 2023 from CCData;
  • won the HedgeWeek best exchange platform award in 2022;
  • Digital Asset Research recognized it as a vetted exchange in 2023;
  • Investopedia ranked it 4.5 out of 5.0 between 2022 and 2024;
  • Forbes listed it in its top 20 best global crypto exchanges in 2023;
  • and even Business Insider recognized it as one of the best cryptocurrency exchanges in 2023 to 2024.

Let’s dig deeper into this CEX.IO exchange review as I talk about each key aspect of this platform.

Is CEX.IO Safe? Regulation and Reputation Explained

CEX.IO has proven to be a safe exchange, which is why it has over 15 million users on its web and mobile platforms across more than 185 countries. Although it welcomes clients from all over the world, 29 countries and regions are exceptions to this rule. So, you have to check to confirm whether your region is legally allowed. In the regions where it is legal, the platform is compliant with local regulations and AML/KYC frameworks.

To ensure users’ information and funds are protected, CEX.IO employs the following security measures:

  • Cold storage and multi-sig wallets. The platform claims that most user funds are stored offline in cold wallets that are tied to multi-signature setups. This CEX.IO wallet security measure ensures the safety of your funds.
  • Hot wallets for operational liquidity. Just a small portion of funds is stored in hot wallets for daily operations.
  • PCI DSS compliance. Card data handling is secured under PCI DSS standards.
  • TLS encryption/SSL: This high-level encryption protects data in transit.
  • Two-factor authentication (2FA). You can enable 2FA for your login and withdrawals to protect your account and funds. If you choose to disable 2FA, you’ll need to wait for 48 hours before you can withdraw. This additional safety mechanism ensures no one else can get your money.
  • Whitelisting. This allows you to whitelist wallet addresses so that withdrawals can only be made to the chosen addresses. So, even if a hacker breaches the 2FA, they still won’t have access to your funds.
  • Ongoing transaction monitoring. In order to detect suspicious patterns, the platform carries out automated reviews of all incoming/outgoing funds. If there is a suspected compromise, the exchange will freeze access and require ID verification.
  • Source-of-funds verification. Another thing that CEX.IO does is that it performs source-of-funds verification in certain cases. The platform will ask users to present documentation that clarifies the origin of funds they are depositing or have deposited.

As a result of all these safety measures and the platform running a public vulnerability disclosure and bug bounty program, it has not suffered any confirmed successful hack or systemic breach.

When you compare CEX.IO to exchanges like Binance, Kraken, or Coinbase, these safety measures are actually in the same league. For instance, CEX.IO has 98% of its coins in cold storage, which is published as proof-of-reserves. This is what is expected of a top exchange platform.

CEX.IO KYC and AML Policies

According to information from the site, the platform follows the EU’s 5th Anti-Money Laundering Directive (5AMLD). It implements customer identification, transaction monitoring, and risk-based reviews. As a result of these regulatory ties, CEX.IO is more legit compared to other unregulated exchanges.

CEX.IO’s AML/KYC policy covers the CEX.IO verification process, sanctions and PEP lists screening, compliance officer, monitoring transactions, and risk assessments. Here’s a detailed process of the verification process, beginning from creating your account.

image1.png

Step 1: Create an account. On the homepage, click “Register” at the top-right corner of the screen. This will take you to the registration page. Click on “Create your account.”

image10.png

Step 2: Fill in registration details

  • Enter your country of residence. Make sure the country you live in is not one of the 29 countries the exchange doesn’t support.
  • Enter your email address. Make sure you have easy access to the email because you’ll need to verify your account through it.
  • Type in a secure password. Use a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters.
  • Click on the checkbox to confirm that you are 18 years old.
  • If you want to receive emails and newsletters, you can click on the checkbox for that.
  • Finally, click “Create account.”

image28.png

Step 3: Confirm your email

  • Go to the email address you used to create the account
  • Copy the verification code that was sent to you. If you didn’t receive a code, go back to the confirmation page and click “Resend.”
  • Paste the code you copied into the field.
  • Click “Continue.”

image19.png

Step 4: Begin the verification

  • Move your cursor to the profile icon at the top-right corner of the screen.
  • Click “Verification.”

image37.png

There are three levels of verification, which determine your account deposit limits and withdrawal limits.

  • Identity. You need to provide a government-issued ID, facial recognition, and address information. Accounts with this level of verification have daily deposit limits of $3,000 and daily withdrawal limits of up to $10,000.
  • Address. You need to provide proof of your address in the form of a utility or bank statement. Accounts with this level of verification have daily deposit limits of $10,000 and daily withdrawal limits of up to $10,000.
  • Enhanced. This level requires you to provide proof of funds in the form of bank statements or tax documents. With this verification, there are no limits on your deposits and withdrawals.

For most people, the first verification level is usually enough. Except you are a large-volume trader, I don’t recommend going through the second and third verifications.

image20.png

Step 5: Verify your identity

  • You’ll be asked to use the app to verify, which is usually faster and smoother because you’ll have to carry out facial recognition. So, unless your webcam is very good, I suggest you use the app.
  • So, scan the QR code to complete the CEX.IO app download process.

image29.jpg

Step 6: Log in to your account

  • Once you’ve downloaded the app, open it.
  • Tap “Log in.”

image18.jpg

  • Enter your email.
  • Type in your password.
  • Tap “Log in.”

image8.png

Step 7: Fill in residential address information

  • Choose your country of residence.
  • Type in your street address.
  • Enter your region or state.
  • Enter your postal/zip code.
  • Type the name of the city where you live.
  • If you want to, provide your apartment number.
  • Tap “Continue.”

image12.jpg

Step 8: Upload your ID

  • You can use either your international passport, national ID card, or driver’s license.

image14.png

  • Capture and upload the front side of your identity document.
  • Capture and upload the back side of your identity document.

Observation: I had trouble uploading my identity document with my phone, so I had to switch to the web version. Make sure the documents are clear and within the required formats. This will prevent any form of delay during verification.

  • Click “Continue.”

image5.png

Step 9: Fill in personal information according to your identity document.

  • Enter your nationality.
  • Type in your first name, and then your last name.
  • Provide your date of birth.
  • Select your gender.
  • Enter the serial number of the ID.
  • Enter the expiration date.
  • Click “Continue.”

image13.png

Step 10: Upload a selfie with your ID

  • Capture or upload a picture of yourself holding the ID.
  • Click “Upload a selfie with ID.”

image4.png

After providing the selfie, CEX.IO will review your verification application, which shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes. When you want to carry out the higher-tier verification, the processing time might take up to a few hours.

image6.png

If you followed all the steps as I instructed, your account will be verified, and you can start using the exchange.

CEX.IO Crypto Trading Fees and Costs

Trade execution fees are not the only fees you have to pay on CEX.IO. You’ll encounter transaction fees (maker/taker), withdrawal costs, and even network or blockchain charges.

The platform makes use of the maker/taker model, which involves:

  • A maker order adds liquidity. A typical example is a limit order that remains on the order book.
  • A taker order removes liquidity. A good example is a market order.

The entry-level maker fee you’ll pay is 0.16%, while the base taker fee is just 0.25%. As you continue to increase your trading volume within 30 days, these twin fees reduce in tiers. Before you know it, if you are a very high-volume trader, you’ll get to a point where the maker is reduced to just 0.00% maker and 0.10 taker.

I should mention that the fee you pay is determined by your current volume before you execute a trade. The transaction fee is deducted in the quote currency of the pair. What that means is that if you traded in BTC/USD, the deduction will be in USD.

The minimum transaction fee for fiat pairs is 0.001 units or the equivalent. On the other hand, the fee for digital assets depends on the rounding policy of the asset you’re trading.

In comparison to other exchange platforms, the fees are more expensive. CEX.IO’s 0.25% taker fee is way higher than Binance’s 0.10% and Coinbase’s fees, which fall within the 0.40% to 0.60%. The good thing about though, is that if you are in the upper and your trading volume grows, CEX.IO’s fees can become competitive or even better in some cases.

Deposit and withdrawal costs are factors you also need to consider before using the platform. Here are the commission/fee for fiat payment methods:

Payment MethodDeposit Commission / FeeWithdrawal Commission / Fee
Visa / Mastercard (USD, EUR, GBP)0.49% to 4.99% + service chargesame as deposit (0.49% to 4.99% + service charge)
SEPA (EUR)flat €2.99flat €2.99
SWIFT / International Bank0.10% (min $10)0.30% + $25 (min $50)
Skrill / Neteller3.99% + 3 (currency unit)3.99% + 3 (currency unit)
Epay1% + $5 (or equivalent)3.99% + 3 (currency unit)
PayPal (USD only)3.99% + $53.99% + $5

If you are making a crypto deposit, CEX.IO will not charge you a platform fee. The only thing you’ll need to do is pay the blockchain’s network/miner/gas fee. Also, the withdrawal cost depends on both the asset you’re dealing with and the network. Due to the fluctuating blockchain fees, CEX.IO reserves the discretion to calculate withdrawal network fees.

Although CEX.IO does its best to operate transparently, there are still some hidden or extra costs that you might incur, such as:

  • Spread/slippage. You might incur extra cost due to the difference between bid vs ask (the spread). This is mostly common in volatile markets.
  • Conversion/FX charges. As much as we often try to avoid it, the reality is that you will face this if your card or bank uses currencies apart from the USD, EUR, and GBP. The foreign exchange conversion fees are usually higher than what the platform states.
  • Minimum fees or rounding. If you are constantly carrying out small trades, the minimum transaction fee or rounding rules can easily make the effective cost higher.

It’s also worth mentioning that the fees are different for the regular and VIP levels. It even varies by volume, as I mentioned earlier. The more your 30-day trade volume increases, the lower your maker and taker fees are in certain higher tiers. You might be surprised to learn that the maker fee can drop to 0.00% if you are at a high volume tier. Also, in certain favorable conditions, the taker fee can drop to 0.10%.

Supported Cryptocurrencies and Trading Pairs

CEX.IO supports USD, EUR, and GBP. So, if you make a payment in any other currency apart from these three, it will be converted to any one of them. But as I said, this will lead to additional exchange charges.

CEX.IO Account Tiers and Features

Unlike other platforms, CEX.IO doesn’t have account designations like Silver, Gold, Platinum, etc. Instead, accounts are categorized according to verification level and trading volume I discussed earlier.

image7.png

The trading volume tier is grouped into 8 levels. It is determined by how much you trade within a 30-day cycle.

  • ≤ $10,000 - 0.25% taker fee
  • ≤ $100,000 - 0.23% taker fee
  • ≤ $500,000 - 0.19% taker fee
  • ≤ $1,000,000 - 0.17% taker fee
  • ≤ $2,500,000 - 0.15% taker fee
  • ≤ $5,000,000 - 0.13% taker fee
  • ≤ $10,000,000 - 0.11% taker fee
  • ≤ 20,000,000 - 0.10%

CEX.IO Bonuses, Promotions, and Crypto Rewards

CEX.IO offers several promotions, bonuses, and rewards from time to time, including:

  • Staking/Earn/Savings. You can stake or deposit a particular cryptocurrency and earn rewards. The APY for some supported assets can reach up to 12% on certain networks.
  • Referral/Affiliate Program. With the referral/affiliate program, you can get a 30% share of the trading fees of the people you refer.
  • Seasonal promotions/bonus offers. CEX.IO occasionally runs cashback, discounted fees, or promotions. A typical example is a rebate on deposit fees, like the 100% fee rebate on deposit that is on until October 31st, 2025.

The terms of use and eligibility criteria for each promotion are unique. Therefore, you need to go through the details of each promotion for more details. Also, your region plays a role in the type of offers you get.

Deposits and Withdrawals on CEX.IO

image25.png

The minimum order or lot size varies by trading pair. You can find the minimum lot size for the pair you are trading under Trading conditions in the trading interface. But if you are making a fiat purchase using a card or instant buy, the minimum amount you have to spend is $20/€20 /GBP 20 or equivalent in other currencies.

These are all the methods you can use for the deposit and CEX.IO withdrawal process and their minimum to maximum daily withdrawal:

  • Card payments:

    Visa - $20-$50,000 (Visa)

    Mastercard - $20-$2,500

  • Bank transfers: Regular bank accounts, Payoneer, Revolut, Wise

  • Mobile wallet: Google Pay, Apple Pay, Venmo

  • E-Wallets:

    Paypal - $20-$10,000

    Skrill and Neteller - $/€/£20 – $/€/£10,000

    Epay - $20-$10,000

  • Cash transfer service:

    MoneyGram - 10 USDC-900 USDC

image16.png

As I said earlier, the minimum and maximum amount you can deposit depends on your verification tier. If you only verified your identity, the maximum you can deposit is $3,000 daily. Those who verified their address can deposit $10,000, and the enhanced tier has no limit. Bear in mind that card deposits often incur commission or conversion charges.

How to Deposit Crypto

Follow these steps to deposit crypto:

image31.png

Step 1: After you have logged in, click “Add Funds.”

image36.png

Step 2: Choose the asset you want from the “Select Asset” field.

image34.png

Step 3: Click the “Deposit address” field.

image3.png

Step 4: Since there are several CEX.IO deposit options, you’ll have to choose your preferred payment method. Since you want to deposit crypto, click “Deposit address.”

This action will display the wallet address that you need to type in your external wallet. Take note that some cryptocurrencies might have additional elements like a memo ID field.

image22.png

Step 5: Copy the wallet address into your external wallet. Alternatively, you can use the QR code to deposit the crypto.

Advanced Trading Tools and Crypto Market Analysis

Just like you would expect from a top trading platform, CEX.IO offers several tools you can use to analyze markets, place sophisticated orders, and even monitor performance.

CEX.IO’s Exchange Plus interface offers a professional charting system that is powered by TradingView technology. So, you don’t need external software to carry out technical analysis.

You can switch between different chart types, including candlestick, line, area, and bar charts.

Trend-Based Fib Time

Gann Square

Patterns

Elliott Waves

The interface also allows you to choose time intervals that range from one minute to one month.

Time Intervas

One thing I loved is the fact that you can customize the chart for color schemes, data overlays, and grid visibility. You can even save templates, which allows you to maintain preferred indicator combinations for different strategies.

customize the chart for color schemes

There are several built-in indicators, including:

  • moving averages (SMA, EMA, WMA),
  • moving average convergence divergence (MACD),
  • relative strength index (RSI),
  • stochastic oscillator,
  • Bollinger bands,
  • and volume profile & moving volume indicators.

If you want to get a multilayered analysis, you can overlay, stack or plot these indicators in subpanels. The interface also allows you to customize parameters such as period length, smoothing type, or color coding to fit your trading methodologies.

Fundamental analysis is also provided to enable users to get the best out of the listed digital assets. You can gain access to detailed asset information for each supported pair. The information includes project descriptions, supply data, and network identifiers. CEX.IO also displays real-time trading volumes, 24-hour percentage change, and liquidity indicators for every market.

Market signals and alerts such as price alerts and notifications, order execution and risk signals, volatility and liquidity indicators are also made available. These ensure you don’t miss out on valuable market and trading opportunities.

Competitive Trading and Exclusive Perks

image2.png

CEX.IO runs trading tournaments, leaderboard contests, and promotional events from time to time. This is done to encourage active trading. The detail of each event varies and some may be only available to certain regions.

image35.png

As of the time of writing, the Autumn Margin Trading Leaderboard competition is ongoing. You can check the details to find out if you are eligible to participate.

Most of these perks usually favor large volume traders or those who refer others. So, always monitor the Giveaways & Competitions section for new promotions.

CEX.IO Customer Support for Crypto Traders

In this CEX.IO customer service review section, I’ll reveal what users think about the platform’s customer service. There are several customer support contact options:

  • Live chat: The chat button is at the right-bottom corner of the screen. Sadly, many users have reported that messages take about 3-4 days before they are replied to. Some even said it took 7 days.
  • Email: You can reach out via email by sending a mail to [email protected]. This is typically slower than the live chat, and issues get resolved within a week.
  • Complaint form: You can also fill out a complaint form on the website.

You can also follow the platform on Facebook, X, LinkedIn, and Telegram.

Customer support is one area where CEX.IO is lacking due to the slow customer service.

Tutorials

The platform provides help center articles, “How to” guides, and CEX.IO API trading guide. These resources help users learn how to navigate and use the web version and mobile app. They are particularly useful for users who are new to crypto or the CEX.IO cryptocurrency trading platform.

Mobile vs Web Versions of CEX.IO

One of the qualities of a good exchange platform is consistent user experience across devices. So, how does CEX.IO’s mobile app and web versions compare? Is the CEX.IO mobile trading experience any good?

First of all, all the basic functions on the web version are available on the mobile app. So, you can buy, sell, swap and get the support you need while on the go.

image17.jpg

The app, however, is streamlined to enable you to easily access certain functions. So, instead of having to check several pages, most main functions are at the bottom of the screen. Another difference between the app and mobile version is the extra protection in form of face ID and touch ID available in the app.

image23.jpg

Although the trading interface contains most of the tools and charts, it’s a bit restrictive due to the smaller screen and the tools are simplified. This is one of the reasons the app might not be the best option for beginners.

The app has both Android and iOS versions, and they are basically the same, except for slight differences in UI layout.

If you are wondering how to use the CEX.IO app, I got you covered. Here’s how to use the app for common actions:

I already shared how to register and verify your account earlier in the article via the app. I’ll move to other common actions now.

How to buy crypto:

image21.jpg

Step 1: Tap the “Buy” icon.

Step 2: Choose the asset you want to buy.

Step 3: Type the amount you want to purchase.

image33.jpg

Step 4: Choose your payment method.

Step 5: Fill in the required information and submit.

Technical analysis:

image27.jpg

Step 1: Tap “Trade” at the bottom of the screen.

Step 2: Choose the  pair you want to trade. CEX.IO best crypto trading pairs are subjective, which is why you need to research before you choose.

image11.jpg

Step 3: Tap the candle chart icon at the right top corner of the screen.

image23.jpg

Step 4: Once the trading interface opens, you can use the indicators and tools the same way you would if you were using the web version.

Deposit:

image9.jpg

Step 1: Tap “Add Funds.”

image32.jpg

Step 2: Choose the asset you want to add.

image24.jpg

Step 3: Type the amount you want to add.

Step 4: Choose the method you want to use to fund the account and then enter all the required information.

Step 5: Tap “Proceed” to complete the process.

What Is Forbidden? Why Could Your Account Be Banned

Doing the following could get your account banned:

  • Using the platform for illegal or illicit transactions such as money laundering or terrorism financing.
  • Providing false or fraudulent KYC documents.
  • Using accounts to bypass regional restrictions.
  • Practices that manipulate a market such as wash trading or spoofing.
  • Violating API usage policies.
  • Using multiple accounts to exploit promotions.
