Degiro Review 2026: Europe’s Best or One of the Top Global Platforms?

If you wish to trade stocks, ETFs, Options, and other conventional assets, the choice of broker becomes important. Read through this Degiro review for details

What if there was a global online stock broker that offered access to 50+ exchanges spanning 30+ countries? Sounds exciting, right?

That’s exactly what Degiro is all about, coming forth as an end-to-end online brokerage setup with over 70 billion pounds in assets under management. But that’s not all. From offering commission-free trades to supporting fee-less deposits and withdrawals, there is more to Degiro than whets the eye.

degiro-homepage.jpg

Degiro was the top-rated investment app per the Financial Times and Investor’s Chronicle 2020.

Throughout the following sections, I will review every aspect of Degiro, from fees and features to the signup flow. By the end of this piece, you should be able to identify why it is the right stock broker for you, especially in a space with competitors like Interactive Brokers, freeTrader, Uphold, and more.

Pros and Cons

Reading through the detailed pros and cons list makes more sense before delving deeper into the detailed reviews.

Pros

  • Compliant with the top-tier global authorities
  • Boasts one of the lowest fee structures for ETFs and Stocks
  • No minimum deposit threshold
  • Some core ETFs can be traded on Degiro with lower fees than usual
  • Offers a diverse product range, including stocks, ETFs, Bonds, and more
  • Supports multiple account types

Cons

  • Not an out-and-out forex broker
  • It doesn’t support card-based deposits
  • Attracts a currency conversion fee

Degiro has received over 90 international awards for its diverse selection of services.

Background and History

Degiro came into existence in 2008. While it initially served as a professional market, in 2013, it started catering to retail investors and has continued since. Degiro is registered with the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets, the UK, Germany’s BaFin, and more regarding regulations.

Five Ex-Binck Bank employees founded this online brokerage firm.

The Sign-Up Flow

Now that you know about the pros and cons, history, and a few exciting things about Degiro, it is necessary to identify the ease of the sign-up flow or the lack thereof. Let us try the same out:

degiro-sign-up.png

To get started, click on the “Open an account” option at the top right corner of the homepage.

As it is a European brokerage setup, I first tested the UK website, which didn’t allow new registrations.

degiro-uk-suspend.png

When I moved to the .com page, this option showed up. For now, let me choose Switzerland. Once done, select the language, fill in the basic details, and hit “open your account.”

Then comes the email verification. You will then be asked to log in, which will take you to the dashboard, where you can fill in the personal details or the verifiable credentials or choose to finish the same later.

Once you go through all the hoops and provide the necessary documents for verification, you can start funding your account and get to trading and learning.

You can provide a passport or government-recognized ID when verifying the account credentials. For address verification, any utility bill or even the bank statement works.

Crucial Limits and Elements Post Signup

Once you sign up and eventually log in, Degiro might ask you to make a quick deposit of $/£0.01 just to activate the account. Barring that, no deposit or withdrawal threshold is imposed by this broker.

Also, bank transfers are preferred when it comes to funding the account. You must first connect your bank account to use Degiro’s entire service set. However, e-wallets like Trustly and Sofort are also supported in some regions.

As for the supported currencies, the base options include:

  • GBP;
  • PLN;
  • EUR;
  • SEK;
  • DKK;
  • CHF;
  • CZK

All Platforms Explored:

I’m already interested in giving Degiro a spin. You can stick to the web interface or try the Android and iOS apps based on your smartphone.

Here are the traits corresponding to each ecosystem:

Web Interface

degiro-web-interface.jpg

  • Seamless UI
  • Access to comprehensive tools like advanced charting and flexible order types
  • Real-time price feeds with minor delay
  • Customizable platform

  • Support for alerts and notifications
  • Advanced security traits
  • Quick access to all the trading instruments
  • Access to research tools

Degiro Web Trader shows prices with a set lag time of 15 minutes, which isn’t the case with mobile apps.

Features and Offerings

It’s finally time to go deeper into Degiro and peek at its features and trader-centric offerings. Here is what I could infer:

Trading Instruments

Degiro offers a detailed and diverse selection of products regarding investing and trading. These include global ETFs, stocks, Bonds, commodities, Funds, Options and Futures, and Structured Products.

Degiro offers various order types specific to every trading category or instrument. For instance, for ETFs and Shares, you can place a day order, a GTC order, a limit order, a market order, a stop loss, a stop limit, and even a trailing stop to taper off profits.

As for the product types, the stock markets are covered, and all the listed stocks on these exchanges are available for trading.

As of January 2024, Degiro doesn’t support Forex, CFDs, Indices, and Cryptocurrencies.

Account Types

While signing up, you will be asked to choose an account type on Degiro. And it wouldn’t be a demo account, as Degiro doesn’t offer one. Instead, you can select between fundamental, active, and day trader accounts. There is also an additional account type, Custody, which is more investor-specific and is meant for the more advanced folks.

Here is a quick table to help you make sense of the user accounts:

Knowledge Hub

Contrary to popular opinion, Degiro packs truckloads of financial tools and knowledge products for new and experienced traders. From product-specific insights and access to trading strategies and relevant insights, Degiro has a lot to offer. Other options include a loaded blog, video-specific insights, and more.

In addition to the mentioned features, Degiro also throws in a cost calculator, helping users calculate the commissions, transaction costs, spreads, and other overheads.

Fee Structure and Overheads

Well, I finished the last segment by talking about costs. So, let us now take this conversation forward.

Several investment and trading instruments are involved, so the fee structure is planned accordingly. For instance, the commissions can go as low as $/£0 for select ETFs, £1 per stock lot for US shares, and £1.75 for each order placed on the London Stock Exchange. The handling fee is a flat £1 for Options contracts, structured products, ETFs, and stocks.

Here is the price breakdown for different asset types:

degiro-fees.jpg

Also, for funds, the cost is $3.9 per fund, followed by a 0.2% overhead for annual administration.

Degiro is one of the few brokers to charge zero inactivity fees, followed by zero custody fees for holding onto user funds.

If you want to convert the supported base currencies to the country-wise currencies, like the USD, you need to pay a flat fee of 0.25%.

Other fee elements and overheads are involved. There is something called the connection market cost, where you pay a yearly fee of £2.50 for trading markets outside the home market.

Security and Customer Support

We have addressed the fee structure, features, and crucial deposit/withdrawal considerations for Degiro. But all of that falls flat on the face without the security considerations. I evaluated each element and came up with the following implementations, besides the extensive approach toward compliance:

  • Fund segregation across accounts
  • Investor compensation schemes
  • Two-factor authentication
  • Risk management protocols like credit management
  • Advanced encryption protocols like SSL

Degiro covers your securities corpus by up to £20,000 as part of the investor protection fund.

Degiro has a Trustpilot score of 4.2, which is excellent after 4000+ reviews. Here are some of the other elements related to this stock broker’s customer support setup:

degiro-trustpilot.webp

  • Phone support in 18 different languages
  • Email support for detailed queries
  • Prompt service over social handles
  • Live chat support
  • Detailed query resolution page with all contact points listed

And that sums up the detailed Degiro review!

Who Should Turn to Degiro?

If you are more of a legacy trader and investor interested in stocks, ETFs, Options, Bonds, and more, all at decent and affordable rates, Degiro is the right platform to consider. But then, you should look at dedicated forex brokers if dealing currency pairs, Crypto CFDs, and other aggressive instruments is your thing.
